Digitally Fabricated exhibition structures

The majority of digitally fabricated exhibition structures are primarily focused on a form of architecture.

Below are some examples of this:

Shellstar Pavilion

This exhibition structure was designed in December, 2012 and displayed within the city of Hong Kong as part of a design festival. The Shellstar is a temporary exhibition, which was designed to gather the attendees of the festival together in a center point. The lightweight structure was developed within an amazing 6 weeks before the festival. This included the design, fabrication, and the assembly of the structure. The aim of this structure was to draw people into the center of the exhibition, and then drawn back out to into the larger festival sights. Three types of digital modeling processes were used in order for this exhibition to exist. They were: form finding, surface optimization, and fabrication planning. The form of the exhibition surfaced out of a digital form finding process. The structure is created with 1500individual cells, which are bent slightly to accommodate the curves of the structure. The exhibition measures at 8m x 8m x 3m. It is constructed from translucent coroplast, nylon cable ties, steel foundations, and PVC and steel reinforcement arches.

I like the look of this exhibition, I think it is really interesting and what is even more amazing is the fact that not only does it look really cool during the day, but also it lights up beautifully at night, allowing it to be noticed from a far distance.

Branching Hypar

This exhibition design was created in 2008 and displayed at the Berkeley Art Museum. The design looks relatively easy to construct, but difficult at the same time. It is created from only straight lines, which cross over one another, and attach to the balconies of different levels of the room. The strings attach from one side of the room and then divide into branches of a rectangular shape at each balcony. On the rectangle walls of the balcony is a video displayed through a projector. The installation was produced as a celebration of the Matrix’s 30-year anniversary. The design was only custom built for one night, but the museum decided to keep the display up for a few months. The requirements for the installation consisted of 15000’ of nylon rope, 4 laser cut acrylic column braces, and 4 videos created by Chris Lael Larson.

Signage

These days signage can be located everywhere we look. it surrounds our daily lives and is unconsciously forced into our minds throughout our days. there are a numerous different types of signage out there. some examples are: street signs, billboards, digital signage, pathway signs, street signs, portable outdoor signage, logo signs for brands, banner signs, outdoor signs, yard signs, and many more. these are just some of the most common signage that we come across daily, but there are many other types of signage that occupies the world. the majority of signage these days are to do with advertisting or some kind of brand promotion.

Below are some examples of different types of signage:

Billboards

Digital signs

Outdoor banners

Outdoor signs

pathway signs

Portable exterior signs

Road signs

Logo signs

Lighting

There are many forms of lighting in the world, below I have come across some examples of these different types of lighting they are: studio lighting, energy efficient, indoor lighting, home lighting, sustainable lighting, hfm lighting, and light bulbs. I have added images of these different types of lighting that exists in our day to day worlds below.

Energy efficient lighting

Diploid Lamp Series

This exhibition structure was designed in 2009. This particular design explores patterns, which were inspired by nature. Some natural inspirations were scales, honeycombs, and barnacles. In order for the structure to exist, parametric modeling, scripting, and digital fabrication were required. The light inside the structure is geometry created, refined, and produced. Individual lamps inside the structure are custom designed, and assembled by hand from paper components that are digitally fabricated. The structure measures at 36’’ x 12’’ x 12’’ and is an ongoing project.

Parallels

This design installation looks at sound and laser installation. MINI and the united visual artists team create it. This exhibition was presented at the Milan design week, and titled as Parallels. The aim of the exhibition is to symbolize how the world is connected to everyone. As a viewer you walk into a dark room, with large spheres at the back of the room. These spheres produce light around the edge of the circle almost like a solar eclipse effect. The light rays change colour from grey to a brighter blue and green. the designers are trying to show how the world is becoming irrelevant, as technology is becoming more focused in our daily lives.

I like the simple and effectiveness of this display in combination with the meaning put across. I think they have shown a clear way to express their concerns and intended communication to their audiences.

Infinity bamboo forest

This design exhibition is created by Prism design. The exhibition was exhibited in Wuxi, China as a room that looks as though it goes for infinity. The designers have used LED lights to create the effect of a never-ending space. The corridors function serves to guide people in a parallel pathway, which has a reflective coating placed onto a glass wall. Due to this design and structure, there is a continuous white glow that is being released from the sides of the walls; the pipes that light up as you walk down the center of the aisle amplify this. The over all aim of the design was to allow people to feel as though they are “walking into an endless void”, which was successfully achieved by Prism Design.

I think this idea is really interesting; walking into a space that never ends would be quite amazing to see. I would imagine that it would feel like you are in space or the universe that just never has and end.

Room Shaped light exhibitions

Artist, Massimo Uberti, created this design exhibition. He has taken space back to its basic essence and created a minimal and effective approach in these spaces. His work is based on something out of a computer program, and sci-fi movies, such as Tron. The idea of the illuminated outlines is clearly seen through these designs. Uberti reduces each space back to it core in order to concentrate on basic elements such as structure. His style is minimal and meaningful. By allowing people to endure his exhibitions his aim is to get people to forget about unnecessary things and appreciate the little things.

I think this going back to basics idea is always important. Often in many things in life when we struggle, we find ourselves going back to those initial steps, the basics. This is often a very helpful solution. I like the message that comes along through the work of Uberti’s light rooms.
