Health Issues
Seeing as I was in and out of hospital,
from the 9th of May till the 26th of May, I wasn’t able
to contribute to the group development and production as much as I would have
like to, or would have if I had been healthy. I did keep in contact with my
group when I could, and kept them informed with my situation. I met up with the
group as much as I could, and in the 6week tired to help them out as much as
possible on the Wednesday and Thursday of hand in. Because of my unfortunate situation,
which occurred so early through the semester, I was not able to produce as much
work as I would have like to, but I have done as much as I possibly can under
my circumstances. I am still recovering and have very little energy so it has
been extremely difficult for me to do much; the whole experience has been
really full on and overwhelming for me to cope with. I hope that the work that
I have produced is worthy enough, and am so grateful for everyone’s
understanding and support for my health issues and obstacles.
Thank you Roxanne
Technology Research
Technology
We
have incorporated various types of technologies and devices within our exhibition
landscape. The aim of having this giant landscape is so that all these devices,
computers, components, gadgets and technical mechanisms can be placed and
stored with in our landscape platform. Everything
is either externally, or internally incorporated into the landscape structure.
The
different devices we are using in our exhibition are Ipads, screens and
embedded screen, Projectors, Raspberry Pi, PIR sensors, Vibroy portable
vibration speakers, computers, and iPods all incorporated within the design of
the landscape structure.
All
of the devices will be operated through batteries and rechargeable outputs. This
minimizes complications, and the mess of having wires connecting to all sorts
of power packs and what not. Having everything battery operated means that
things will be kept simple and tidy, creating an environment that is easy to
work in.
Below
I have researched information about different devices and technologies so that I
can gather a better understanding of how these devices work and how we will
need to use them to benefit our exhibition.
LG Light and sharp portable Projector
The benefits of
using this portable projector are the following:
-
It
has a LED light source
-
It
is a long lasting LED source
-
It
has a built in digital TV tuner
-
Has
great resolution
-
It
is easy to use and display – only the size of your hand
-
Easy
on and off switch
-
External
battery
-
It
can be connected with HDMI
-
It
can be shared with Miracast, and WIDI devices
-
Built
in Wi-Fi is an option
The following
are images of what the projector actually looks like:
LG has created
this very compatible small projector that comes with plenty of benefits. This projector
produces high quality imagery through LED lighting. This device allows you to
watch TV shows and movies through the digital tuner. Due to having a long
lasting LED light, this allows the projection to be enjoyed for up to 30
000hours of entertainment before it runs out. The colour range and saturation
are immaculate. You can share this device with other compatible devices.
Over all, it is
a great option to use to display information into our exhibition, and operates
independently and is a dependable source of technology for us to use. We have
decided to use this projector from the inside of the landscape structure, which
will them project a rear projection on to the largest screen our landscape
structure contains. The good thing about having a hollow structure is that we
are able to place our devices and equipment inside the display where it is out
of site from the spectators view. The reason why we decided to do a rear
projection is because if it was a normal projection there is the possibility of
people walking through the light, blocking the information that is meant to be
projected onto the embedded screen. By using rear projection we can avoid any
human interference between the two devices.
Raspberry Pi
A Raspberry pi is
a device, which was developed in the UK. The Raspberry Pi Foundation with the
intention to encourage basic computer science throughout schools created it.
This device is very small, the size of a credit card. This miniature computer
plugs into a TV and a keyboard. The raspberry pi is a very capable mini
computer, which can be used for many things, such as spreadsheets, word
processing, games, and also plays high definition videos. It does rely on an SD card for long time storage,
as it does not have a built in hard disk, or solid-state drive. The model does
contain two USB ports, and is friendly with mice. Unfortunately the Raspberry
pi does not come with a real time clock, however one can be easily installed if
needed.
Below are some images of what the Raspberry Pi looks like:

The aim of the Raspberry Pi device would be to use as a type of computer which can also be used to project videos and projections onto the embedded screens for the audiences to look at. This device is really practical, and small to put it many places, or multiple uses. This would be a handy device to use for the creation of the exhibit’s technical displays.
PIR Motion Sensor
PIR stands for passive infrared sensor. They are also referred to as Pyroelectric or IR motion sensors. PIR sensors capture any sense of motion. They are mostly used to detect when a human has moved past, or within the sensors range of detection. The PIR sensors are a small device, which use low power, and don’t wear out very easily. Another benefit is they are not very expensive, and are really easy to use. Because of these benefits, they are commonly found in appliances and gadgets used in businesses and homes.
PIR sensors are
basically made up of a round metal can with a rectangular crystal in the
center; this part detects the levels of infrared radiation. All things around
us release a low level of radiation, and the warmer something is the more
radiation it produces. Hence human’s body heat activates the sensor reactions
by simply coming in range with the sensor.
Below are some
images of what a PIR sensor looks like:
PIR sensors are
great for detecting when a person has come in close contact with the sensors
and also when people leave the area of the sensors. They are an easy to use
device and work really great for the over all purpose.
The group
decided to use the PIR sensors to activating the display information when
someone comes in range with the text. This way the light will grab their attention
and keep them interested in the display.

Usually people
associated the best sound and the highest quality with large or bigger
speakers. Those types of giant speakers aren’t practical to carry around and
travel with. Where the Vibroy portable vibration speaker is very easy to carry
around and is small enough to use for anything. The benefit in using the Vibroy
Portable Vibration Speaker is that it turns any objects into speakers. All you
have to do is stick it on to whatever you want the sound to be produced from.
Below are some examples of what the Vibroy portable vibration speaker looks like and how it is used:
This type of
speaker will work really well for our exhibition; it is exactly what we require
for our visual communications in terms of sound being produced. We discussed
that the speakers will be placed on either side of the big rear projected
screen, and also behind the spectator on the giant stove in the room. This way
the three speakers act as a type of surround sound for the viewer passing by
and interacting with the visual display.
Portable
vibration speakers will also be placed on other parts of the structure for
different types of sounds and information being shared to the audience. They can
also be used for music when the performances take place during the exhibition. These
are really great because they are small, easy to move, easy to operate and can
link to iPods or other devices which is really handy.
Ipads
Ipads are a
really easy and familiar source for people to interact with. They are fun, interactive
and exciting for people, as everyone is always so curious to touch things.
People enjoy interacting with devices for entertainment.
The great thing
about the Ipad minis is that they are small, and easily portable. You can have
the hand held or embedded into the main display, which is what we have decided
on. The Ipad has great visual quality. It is battery charged, so no wires are
necessary or required for usage. Each detail and text is remarkably crisp and
clear to see from a viewer’s perspective. It has a very high resolution.
The good thing
is you can take the device with you wherever you go, so it is easily carried
and transformed. The Ipad comes with built in apps, but can also display any
information needed for the exhibition, whether that is a slideshow, or a video
or an interactive questioner or task for the spectators to take part in.
The Ipad is
wireless, and performs well with Wi fi so that you can make quick and easy
connections when required.
Overall, it is a
pretty useful device as entertainment for the viewer’s to interact with. It is
fun and easy to understand. There are numerous Ipads, which we have agreed to
install into the main landscape design, available for free use and attraction.
In conclusion
I think that we
have a good range of devices and technologies that are displayed with in our
exhibition. There are enough devices that vary, in order to grab the
spectator’s attention. The more you look, the more you discover. This element
of surprise and hidden factors is a really interesting and unique aspect to our
design of our main structure. I don’t think that anyone will get board of it,
as there is always something new for the viewer to entertain himself or herself
with. The interactive screens, projections, and Ipads are all very engaging
interactions, but the structure and design on the main landscape, also contains
a mysterious and exciting aspect to it. This allows the viewers to be attracted
to the entire exhibit as a whole.
